If you have been looking for an Over the Counter (OTC) sleep aid, then the first thing you need to do is decide which one you are comfortable with. There are three main categories for sleep aids: melatonin, herbal, and antihistamines. The first thing to do though is to make sure that you set yourself up properly for sleep. Check out my Home page for more info.
Antihistamines will normally have the highest sedative effect, while melatonin can help to regulate your disrupted sleep after jet lag or swing shifts, and lastly herbal remedies will normally have a very light effect on your sleep.
I have tried a lot of OTC sleep aids because I am a true insomniac and prescription medications can often times be too harsh for me to take, so I do my research and test the sleep aids that come out.
I will be looking at the best over the counter or OTC sleep aids in three different categories. Some of these pills are quite strong and even though you do not need to have a prescription, you need to ensure that you are going to read the whole review to see what I found.
This is an antihistamine that is one of the strongest and most effective OTC sleep aids that you will find. I also found that in all three categories this one was the strongest out there.
The active ingredient happens to be Doxylamine, which is a powerful antihistamine sedatives. You will feel mentally and physically drowsy after you take it, which is what you want especially if you are an insomniac.
It is best if you plan on having a full night’s sleep, as it should get you through the insomnia that you may be having. It isn’t the best choice if you plan to go to bed late and get up early.
There isn’t an official statement of how long it will stay in your body, just that it depends on your metabolism, size, and age.
So just to be on the safe side, it best that you if you plan to get up in less than 8 hours, that you not take it or be prepared to feel a bit drowsy.
If you have time to get a good night’s sleep and wake up slowly, then Kirkland sleep aid may do you a lot of a good.
When it comes to safety, Doxylamine won’t cause any issues with addiction like other prescription sleeping pills do, and you won’t have to keep increasing the dose either.
If you plan on using an OTC sleeping pill for a few nights to a few weeks, then this will be a great and effective option.
Berry Sleep happens to be a nonaddictive sleep aid made from melatonin that won’t leave you feeling drowsy the next day. It is best if you are not really big on taking a strong antihistamines or any prescription medications.
Melatonin isn’t a powerful sleeping aid, but it does work differently than the medication or an antihistamine sleep aids and can be quite effective for certain sleep issues. Check out my article on can you od on melatonin?
Rather than just knocking you out, it actually boosts the hormone that you have in your body which helps to maintain a regular sleep pattern. It is for this reason that it happen to be promoted as a natural sleep aid.
Whatever makes Berry Sleep interesting is that the melatonin actually comes from berries such as tart cherry extract, goji berry extract, and passion fruit extract.
An important point that you should consider is that melatonin is great for certain sleep issues. There is even scientific proof that states it helps delayed sleep phase syndrome, jetlag and even shift work.
Believe it or not it when it comes down to having insomnia, it seems to help some people more than others and that it tends to be to useful for those who have a sleep pattern that has been badly disrupted and you need to get yourself back on track.
I did find that it was helpful during a time where I was having a lot of trouble falling asleep and then staying asleep. The next day there was no grogginess or any other types of side effects. So I was quite surprised by it.
Overall if you are interested in trying a sleep aid that is made from melatonin, then Berry Sleep is the best option for you than any others due to the natural melatonin content.
Unisom SleepGels have the type of antihistamine that you find in normal sleeping pills, which is Diphenhydramine hydrochloride.
There are three different types of versions that are out there. You have SleepGels, QuickMelts and SleepTabs. The difference is whether it comes in 25mg or 50mg and how it is absorbed into the body.
Unisom doesn’t have the same type of punch like Kirkland when it comes to how it knocks you out. It is quite useful if you need just a little sleep and don’t want to feel the effects the next day.
Just like with most sedatives you may be a bit groggy at first depending on how you react to them.
It is quite possible that you build up a tolerance to this type of antihistamine when you compare it to Kirkland Sleep aids. So if you find yourself needing to increase how much of a dosage that you are taking above the recommended level, then it is definitely a sign that you should stop taking them at once.
Overall, Unisom is the best over the counter sleep aid if you want to start out on an antihistamine sleep aid for the first time, but want a lighter introduction to them.
So when it comes to sleep aids, these are the best of the best and it basically just boils down to a willingness to try them out and see what will happen. Sometimes finding the right type of sleep aid can be hard and it is hard to find out if it will help you or not.
