So what is “sleeping smart”? Having a good night’s sleep is the cornerstone of good health. There’s nothing worse than not having your health. Ask anyone who doesn’t have their health what they would give to be healthy. Unfortunately in the western world of go go go we don’t pay enough attention to our health.
Sleep is such a ridiculously powerful tool for our health but we don’t appreciate it. Take a step back for a minute and think to yourself “If we’re sick, how do we get better”? The answer is that we need rest. That’s how powerful sleep is. It literally allows your body and mind to heal itself. Not only that, if you haven’t rested well, the next day is a bit of a waste because you’re not at your best and you won’t be able to enjoy your day as much as if you woke up with some energy.
What an amazing tool that sleep is to have at our disposal. Now it’s time to make sure we’re sleeping smart.
Why aren’t you sleeping well?
The first thing you have to do is figure out why you aren’t sleeping well. It could be one particular issue, it could be several. When you have a bad nights sleep, ask yourself the next day why didn’t I sleep well last night? Follow my guidelines below and you’ll be able to tackle the issue/s as to why you’re not sleeping well.
The keys to a good night’s sleep
Having a good diet
When you put yourself through an up-down cycle of energy, whether it be through energy drinks or coffee or sugary food, you generally won’t sleep well at night because your body has become so accustomed to being in an unnatural rhythm.
If you consume a lot of calories right before bed, they’ll either wake you up because they’re energy or you’ll store them as fat. If you’re unlucky, it will be both!
Alcohol is a hidden course of not resting well. The alcohol that you consume in the evening will convert to energy while you’re asleep which can course a restless night.
Not doing too much before bedtime
If you’re working late or on your phone or watching an exciting/scary show right before bed, how exactly are you going to be in a relaxed state to go to bed? If you’re brain is working overtime, if you’re in a really light filled room then chances are you won’t drift off to sleep well.
Having the right mattress
There are so many mattresses out there but how do you choose the right one? Some mattresses are just better than others. We all have different budgets so I’ve reviewed several mattresses to help you make up your mind. I’ve reviewed the Loom and Leaf Mattress and the Casper mattress.
A cheaper alternative to buying a new mattress is to buy a mattress topper. Check out the My Pillow mattress topper.
Having the right pillow
If you’ve got the wrong pillow and have a sore neck because of it, you won’t rest well. I’ve tested several pillow and will let you know about them now.
The My Pillow is a pillow I like and I’ve reviewed it here. I also keep a track of My Pillow Promo Codes because you can save a fortune when buying the pillow
I’m always busy with work and kids and I’ve always got something on the go but I’ve now learned to take some time to myself to just de-stress, to not think.
There are studies that show that being in nature will take away the stress. Nature is so powerful that even looking at trees on your computer can help relax you.
The other thing with stress is if you have things on your mind right before you go to bed, you won’t get a good night’s sleep. You may even wake up in the middle of the night because of your worries and then not be able to get back to sleep. That’s a real pain. That’s why it’s so important to have a positive attitude and manage your stress as well as you can.
Getting some exercise
The human body was made to be active. That doesn’t mean you have to try run a marathon or spend two hours in the gym every day. It just means be active. Some of the people who live the longest in the world, Okinawa in Japan and Ikaria in Greece don’t go to the gym at all. They do have active lifestyles though of either doing some Tai Chi or walking up and down hills as part of growing their own fruit and vegetables.
Don’t sit at your desk for over an hour, get up every hour and just be a little active, stretch your legs etc. When your body becomes stiff from sitting down all day, you can’t expect to get a good nights sleep.
It’s all about routine
All of the steps above might look like there’s a lot to take in but it’s not really. If you’ve got several bad habits and try to break them all at once, you’ll probably struggle. Figure out what the number one course is to you not sleeping well and then tackle it and form a new, better routine. If you’re checking work emails before you go to bed, cut that activity out because you’ll no doubt be thinking about work as you go to sleep which is just crazy.
